Liberia Seismic 1

Why Liberia?

The geological evolution of offshore Liberia is related to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. The Harper Basin has a geological history and petroleum system analogous to surrounding geological basins associated with the recent discoveries in Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and the conjugate Guyana.

Exploration success along the northern South American coastline has recently influenced the potential prospectivity offshore Liberia with a coastline that can be tectonically reconstructed back to fit with the Guyana Basin.

The shelf area features typical syn-rift structures. Identified growth sequences were sourced from quartz-rich sediments eroded from the Precambrian outcrops onshore. During the transition of syn-rift to drift, renewed erosion during the Albian relocates some of the reservoir material on the slope, now pinching out against the basin binding fault. Brightening into the up-dip trap creates interesting leads along the basin.

Licensing Opportunities

The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) has announced an indefinite extension to direct negotiation on all 33 offshore blocks over the Harper and Liberia basins within the offshore Liberia acreage. The LPRA is working closely with the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) to implement the next phase of exploration offshore Liberia.

Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis following the prescribed 5-phase process outlined on the LPRA website (www.lpra.gov.lr). You can also contact TGS for relevant material and guidance using the form on this page and download the following Investment Information Package that we have prepared:

For further information regarding the negotiations, we encourage you to contact the LPRA at info@lpra.gov.lr or +231777110110. For information on the exclusive TGS data available across these basins for the assessment of exploration opportunities, please contact TGS

The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) is pleased to announce that it has received a pre-qualification application from ExxonMobil for four offshore blocks in Liberia.

Our Data Coverage

Our Data

TGS holds a range of multi-client data across the tendered acreage to support the blocks on offer both in the Harper and Liberia Basin. In May 2022, TGS announced reprocessing over 5,100 km2 of key 3D seismic covering the North East region of the Liberia Basin. The survey was processed using a Pre-Stack Depth Migration (PSDM) workflow to enable optimal imaging of the main targets in the Cretaceous reservoirs to reveal the latest insights into prospectivity.

All other data is available now -  view the TGS data library in the interactive window above.
  • 50,487 km of 2D multi-client seismic
  • 31,350 km2 of 3D multi-client seismic
  • Gravity and magnetic data

Cenomanian fans captured in RMS maps (root mean square average of seismic amplitude) highlight the large extent of these bodies. Note the exploration potential of these bodies, as to their sizeable volumes and being covered with back-stepping muds, reducing one of the most significant risks of the margin, the up-dip seal.

Liberia's Geology

BSR (bottom simulation reflector) and OPAL boundaries (both chemical and mineralogical phenomena) were identified in the modern Sunfish 3D seismic survey and were used in the basin modeling to tie source rock (SR) maturation phase, pore pressure and burial basin temperature in the system. Models of various locations throughout the basin reveal that oil and gas have likely been generated and continue to be in active kitchens at present, with the Albian SR in the gas window and the well-extended Turonian-Cenomanian interval in the oil window. Their hydrocarbon generation timing is favorable for the stacked slope channel systems in the Late Cretaceous system, sealed by backfilling muds.
